Why study at Léon
Léon is an idyllic, picturesque coastal resort commune and eco-environmental sanctuary located in the Landes department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France along the world-famous Côte d'Argent (Silver Coast), situated between Bordeaux (1.5 hours north) and Biarritz / Bayonne Basque Coast (45 minutes south). Renowned for the crystal-clear Lake Léon (Lac de Léon) and the Courant d'Huchet National Nature Reserve (nicknamed 'The French Amazon' for its lush subtropical river delta), the Atlantic surf beaches of Saint-Girons, and the world's largest cultivated maritime pine forest. Léon is a key academic and research hub within the regional university network of the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (UPPA - premier public research university, holder of the prestigious French State 'I-SITE' Excellence Label for Energy and Environmental Solutions E2S, with nearby campuses in Dax, Mont-de-Marsan, and Bayonne/Anglet). UPPA and regional institutes are internationally recognized for the Institut Universitaire de Technologie (IUT des Pays de l'Adour - Biological Engineering, Agri-Food Technology, and Environmental Management), ESTIA Institute of Technology (School of Advanced Industrial Technologies - Robotics, Aeronautics, and Sustainable Engineering), and the Institut du Thermalisme in Dax (France's only national university institute dedicated to hydrotherapy, wellness medicine, and thermal healthcare). Degrees are taught in French and English with official European ECTS degrees. International students benefit from France's heavily subsidized public university tuition fees, CAF French housing subsidies (APL), healthy outdoor Atlantic surfing and eco-living lifestyle, and the French 1-year 'Recherche d'Emploi ou Création d'Entreprise' (RECE) post-study work residence authorization.
Fees
Tuition fees for international students at public university institutions in the region (Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour UPPA / IUT) are standardized by the French government, costing approx. €175 to €2,770 per year for Bachelor's degrees (Licence) and €250 to €3,770 per year for Master's degrees (with many programs applying standard European fee exemptions for non-EU students). Specialized engineering master's programs at ESTIA Institute of Technology range between €6,500 and €9,000 per year. Fully furnished student studio apartments and regional residences (CROUS student residences and private student complexes in Dax, Mont-de-Marsan, and Bayonne/Anglet) cost between €350 and €600 per month (reduced significantly by up to €150–€220/month through French government CAF / APL housing allowance), while private rentals in Léon and the Silver Coast range from €380 to €650 per month.
