Celebrated for the monumental St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world with gold-plated domes), the ancient Roman ruins of Serdica (integrated directly into the Serdika metro station), Boyana Church (UNESCO World Heritage Site with 13th-century frescoes), Vitosha Boulevard (lively pedestrian avenue filled with outdoor cafes against mountain views), and its status as one of Europe's top 10 fastest-growing tech and software engineering startup hubs (housing major R&D hubs for VMware, SAP, and Bosch). Sofia is one of Europe's premier medical and technical higher education destinations, home to world-renowned institutions: Medical University of Sofia (MU-Sofia / MUS - established in 1917, the oldest and highest-ranked medical research university in Bulgaria enrolling over 9,000 students from more than 80 countries, globally renowned for the Faculty of Medicine offering the 6-Year Doctor of Medicine MD in English, Faculty of Dental Medicine offering 5-Year Dental Medicine DMD in English, and Faculty of Pharmacy - recognized across the European Union, UK GMC, US ECFMG, and Arab medical councils across Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, and Egypt), Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski (founded in 1888, premier public comprehensive university ranked in the QS World Top 800), Technical University of Sofia (TUS - leading engineering powerhouse), and University of National and World Economy (UNWE).
