Why study at Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the cosmopolitan capital and global financial, technological, and creative powerhouse of the Netherlands, world-famous for its UNESCO World Heritage canal ring, bicycle culture, open-minded culture, and exceptionally high English proficiency (over 95% of the population speaks fluent English). Amsterdam is home to world-renowned higher education powerhouses: University of Amsterdam (UvA - founded in 1632, ranked #53 globally in the QS World University Rankings, #1 globally for Communication and Media Studies, with 6 Nobel laureates), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam - elite research university top-ranked for Life Sciences, Computer Science, and Law), and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS / HvA). Over 250 Bachelor's and Master's degree programs are taught 100% in English within the European Bologna framework. International students benefit from direct access to global corporate headquarters (Booking.com, Philips, Uber, ASML), high quality of life, and straightforward IND student residence permit processing with a 1-year post-study 'Orientation Year' (Zoekjaar) work visa.

Student Visa

International non-EU students require an Entry Visa (MVV) and Dutch Residence Permit (VVR) for study purposes. The Dutch university acts as the recognized sponsor and applies directly to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) on the student's behalf. Applicants transfer proof of financial living costs (approx. €12,500/year set by IND) and tuition fees to the university escrow account. Upon arrival, students collect their biometric residence permit card at the IND office in Amsterdam.
